On a personal note: The bridge is a fabulous piece of architecture and engineering, but I have been opposed to this type of bridge since I saw the first drawing of it. My feeling is this bridge design may be harmful to the many species of local and migratory birds which use the river as a flyway. Once the bridge is completed they will have to navigate between all the suspension cables. I also feel the bridge project has been driven by egos more than anything else. The bridge started out as a 2.5-5 million dollar project. By 1999 the price tag had grown to 13 million dollars, and now has soared to a 23.3 million dollar project.
